DONATION CAMPAIGN

Expanding Our Impact: 1st Step’s New Campus Unveiled

We are thrilled to announce that 1st Step has acquired a new property in West Tulsa, marking a significant milestone in our journey to better serve our community and the young men in our program. Named the William Kellough Center in honor of our esteemed retired Judge and cofounder, this new facility represents a significant milestone in our mission to provide comprehensive support to young men in need. This new campus represents a bold step forward in our mission to support young men in overcoming the challenges of substance abuse, mental health issues, and criminal behavior.

The William Kellough Center will now house 14 young men and a dedicated house manager, offering a safe and supportive environment as part of their journey towards recovery and personal growth. This housing component is fully functional and ready to welcome participants immediately. The facility includes comfortable living spaces designed to foster a sense of community and stability, which are crucial for the recovery process.

However, our vision for the new campus extends beyond housing. We are currently preparing to launch a capital campaign to fund the renovation and construction of the other parts of the facility. These plans include creating classrooms for educational classes, therapy rooms for individual and group counseling sessions, and office spaces for our staff. Once completed, these additions will allow us to bring all our services under one roof, creating a cohesive and comprehensive support system for our participants. By centralizing our operations, we can streamline our services, making it easier for participants to access the full spectrum of assistance they need.

This integration ensures that our young men receive continuous and coordinated care, enhancing their chances of success in their recovery and personal development journeys. The new campus will enable us to grow our programs and reach more individuals who need our help. The larger facility provides the space necessary, allowing us to accommodate more participants and diversify our offerings ensuring that each participant receives tailored and focused care.

For the young men in our program, this new campus is a beacon of hope and opportunity. It provides a stable and supportive environment where they can focus on their recovery without the distractions and stresses that often come with being in multiple locations. The all-encompassing nature of the new facility means that they can build stronger relationships with their peers and mentors, fostering a sense of community and belonging. This environment is crucial for their mental and emotional well-being, helping them to stay motivated and committed to their recovery.

The new campus in West Tulsa is not just a physical expansion; it symbolizes our commitment to creating a supportive and nurturing environment where young men can thrive. We are excited about the possibilities this new property brings and look forward to continuing our work in transforming lives and building a stronger, healthier community. Thank you for your continued support in making this vision a reality.

Kevin B.’s journey through the 1st Step Male Diversion Program is nothing short of inspiring. Arriving from the juvenile courts, Kevin faced numerous challenges, but he approached each with unwavering determination and a commitment to transforming his life. His story is a shining example of the resilience and potential within every young man who joins our program.

One of Kevin’s most significant achievements has been securing his independence—a milestone marked by the moment he proudly obtained his driver’s license. This accomplishment was more than just a legal requirement; it symbolized his newfound responsibility and a gateway to greater freedom. Not long after, Kevin took another monumental step by purchasing his own vehicle. For many, a car is just a means of transportation, but for Kevin, it represents a hard-earned victory, a testament to his perseverance and his desire to forge a better path for himself.

Kevin’s dedication to building a solid career foundation is equally impressive. Recognizing the importance of education and skill development, he enrolled in welding training at Tulsa Tech. Through this rigorous program, he earned his welding certificate and additional certifications in forklift operation, OSHA safety, and overhead crane operation. These accomplishments are more than just credentials—they are the building blocks of a promising career, crafted through Kevin’s hard work and determination to create a future filled with opportunities.

Perhaps one of the most profound milestones in Kevin’s journey is the dismissal of his court case. This achievement is a powerful acknowledgment of his personal growth and the positive changes he has made in his life. It is a reflection of how far he has come, turning a new page and leaving behind the challenges of his past.

Looking to the future, Kevin continues to set his sights high. He diligently works and saves money with the goal of achieving independent living. His focus on long-term stability and success is a clear indicator of his maturity and commitment to creating a life of substance and security.

PRO-SOCIAL EVENTS

Building Bonds & Supporting Desistance

This summer, 1st Step organized a few pro-social events that made a significant impact on the young men in our program. In July, participants and graduates came together for an exhilarating day of airsoft. This activity not only provided an adrenaline rush but also fostered camaraderie, teamwork, and trust among the young men. These relationships are crucial in building a supportive network that encourages positive behaviors and personal growth.

At the end of July, the group visited Smokey Valley, where they spent the day engaging in outdoor activities, relaxing by the water, and enjoying each other's company. Such outings are vital for our participants as they offer a healthy and constructive way to spend their time, reducing the temptation to engage in negative behaviors. By participating in these events, the young men learn to appreciate the joy of sober living and the benefits of engaging in wholesome, recreational activities.

These pro-social events play a crucial role in the process of desistance, which is the gradual reduction in offending behavior. By providing opportunities for positive social interactions, we help the young men develop the skills and mindset necessary to lead a crime-free life. Additionally, these activities support their recovery journey, offering them new ways to cope with stress and build resilience. Through continuous participation in such events, our young men can reinforce their commitment to sobriety, strengthen their social ties, and work towards a brighter, more stable future.

IN-HOUSE PROGRAMS & UPDATES

Featured Programs

Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)

Our in-house Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) program, led by Dr. Dan Duffy, plays a vital role in the success of the 1st Step Male Diversion Program. This program provides immediate cognitive-behavioral counseling to new participants, offering early intervention and continuous support over a 3-6 month period. By addressing deep-seated behavioral patterns, the MRT program helps participants break free from substance abuse and criminal behavior, laying a strong foundation for long-term recovery and desistance. Under Dr. Duffy’s expert guidance, participants not only transform their own lives but also work to rebuild and strengthen family relationships, ensuring a holistic approach to their rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.

Work Readiness Program

Our program is dedicated to equipping participants with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the workforce. Through a comprehensive approach, we focus on building self-esteem, helping participants understand employer expectations, and overcoming barriers to employment. In our Work Readiness component, participants gain essential skills like resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace communication, ensuring they are well-prepared to thrive in the job market.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. Many of our participants take the next step by advancing from Work Readiness to vocational training in fields such as welding, CDL B, or CNC machining. Thanks to our strong partnerships with CEO and Prosper OK, our young men have the opportunity to attend these specialized training programs at no cost. Not only do they receive top-notch education and hands-on experience, but they also earn a weekly stipend while attending, which helps to support them as they focus on their future careers.

This holistic approach ensures that our participants are not only ready for employment but also positioned to excel in skilled trades that offer long-term stability and growth. We are proud to see them move from learning the basics to mastering complex skills, all while gaining the confidence and qualifications needed to build a successful, self-sufficient life.

Community & Collaboration

Cherokee Tribal Nation

By joining forces with the Cherokee Tribal Nation, we are able to offer tailored support that respects and incorporates the unique cultural values and traditions of Cherokee participants. This partnership not only enhances our program’s ability to address the specific needs of these individuals but also fosters a deeper connection with the community, promoting healing and empowerment through culturally relevant support.

This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and comprehensive care. It underscores our dedication to providing every participant with the resources they need to succeed, while also embracing and honoring the rich cultural backgrounds they bring to our program. We are excited about the positive impact this partnership will have on our participants and look forward to seeing the meaningful contributions they will make as they embark on their journey toward recovery and reintegration.

Their journey towards a brighter future has also involved gaining essential job skills and securing meaningful employment, marking a new chapter of stability and self-sufficiency. These accomplishments reflect the program’s impact, highlighting the powerful connection between desistance from criminal behavior, sustained recovery, and the restoration of family bonds. As these graduates continue to make positive contributions to their communities, their stories serve as a testament to the strength of perseverance and the life-changing support offered by the 1st Step Male Diversion Program.

RESEARCH

Structure, Form & Neurophysiology in Criminal Desistance

by David Phillips

Understanding the process of criminal desistance—the cessation of criminal behavior—requires a multidisciplinary approach. This paper explores how social structures, individual agency, and neurophysiological mechanisms interact to influence desistance. By examining both the environmental and biological factors that contribute to an individual's decision to move away from criminal activity, this research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding desistance. The paper also highlights the role of brain structures like the prefrontal cortex in decision-making and self-control, offering insights into rehabilitation efforts.
